I have a very small bathroom and would like to replace my horrible OLD tile...?
What is the typical cost to remove the old tile on the shower walls and bathroom floor and replace with new tile? Also, what is the cost to install a (very) small vanity>? ... Oh yes, in California. And for kicks, if I were to have the bath replaced - materials not included.

- Do you mean bathtub? My mother had her bathroom shower removed and retiled. We got 4 estimates from about $3,800 for everything, materials included, to about $11,000 to do the entire bathroom---that meant replacing the flooring, shower tile, plumbing, vanity, lights, etc. Obviously, we went with the cheapest bid. I have since found out that there might have been an even cheaper way to get the shower done, but, live and learn. It was a big hassle to make the appointments, meet the guys there, and then let them insult our intelligence as they gave us prices of $6,500 just to do the shower. I think having our intelligence insulted was the worst part of the process. I have found that most contractors in CA have raised their prices a great deal in the last 3 to 4 years thanks to the housing price boom. Now that we're in a slump I have read that a lot of them are hurting for work. I suggest you get some referrals from friends, coworkers, and maybe a real estate agent. Get some names, get 4 to 5 estimates, and go with the one who can give you references and a decent price.
- if you rip out the old tile on your floor and your tub surround, you must also assume the cost to replace whats underneath, cement, plaster board, cement board, etc. you might want to consider installing the new tile right on top of the old. Ive never done it as a craftsman. i normally don't do full bathrooms for customers, i do my own so i do full rips for my own. my trade being a plumber Ive done a lot of work for other craftsmen, thats how i know about this technique. all that being said if financing is an issue it would b alot cheeper to tileover. you will need to cut door, extend toilet flange(sometimes you can get away with a larger wax ring) plumbing; try to get a mechanic(min 5 years experience) to work for you on an hourly basis about 40$ an hour and his helper at about 15-20$ an hour.of course this means you r paying for material. offer to pay the plumber 1 hour of his time to come and make your material list and another hour to get the material. it may not go down like that but it starts a relationship with him that you will pay but u are watching your time. carpentry; im not sure because i get industry prices. my price i pay is about 3/5$ a square foot. thats labor only, and i buy material. so u can assume 10 to 20$ a square foot also carpentry includes everything besides plumbing and electric. electrical; about the same as a plumber maybe a little less like 5$ less an hour i would like to add, these numbers apply only if u assume the role of general contractor, also get ur carpenter first he will assist you by being ur subcontractor/foreman. now if you dont want to be the G.C. the answer to your cost question is an arm and a leg!

- I presume that you are talking about ceramic tile. Instead of tearing it out you can buy what is a bathtub repainting kit and paint the tile with it. It has a very strong smell and you do need to have ventilation and a good respirator but if you follow the directions on the paint you will have a nice looking bath and the cost of materials should not exceed $100.00 which would include the respirator. You could go to a Home Depot or other building supply store and purchase a vanity also and the cost would depend on what you would want to spend and depending on the laws this could be done by almost anyone who is handy with tools.
