How hard is remodeling?

We were quoted some very high prices for simple bathroom remodeling. no moving walls, just replace fixtures, new vanity..prices were 20-30 thousand dollars. We are considering doing all except the permit required work ourselves..any comments on this? Can we do it??

  1. What??? Where do you live, my GAWD that's high! Should be around $5000 at the most! What kind of fixtures did you pick out, a gold bathtub??? So first of all get another quote! Second, I have renovated 10 old houses and done just what you are planning. The piping for the plumbing is not something you should do on your own. If it springs a leak, the damage caused will cost a lot more than hiring a plumber! :) Installing a vanity isn't that hard, but most plumbers will do that as part of the job, same with a tub. The last one I did 11 months ago we re-did the entire bathroom, I bought the fixtures and the plumber did all the work.... $800 for labor. New vanity, new sink, new tub, new surround, new toilet, new faucets, all from Lowes and nice quality- $1700. Call some plumbers, there has to be someone who will do that for you cheaper.
  2. ok your going to do a bathroom well it is not as hard as you would think and with the proper tools it can be done very inexspencivelybut their are thing you should watch for as alot of time the floor it's self could be damaged from water damage but dont let that scare you the flooring and sub flooring is not that hard to replace with the proper tool's as I mentioned now a good place to start is at ahome improvement center they do offer classes and have people who know alot about the way to go about it I would love to tell you how to do this but it would take all nite and some friend's just showed up but you can e-mail me at [festeringfestus@yahoo.com] and I can try to answer all your questions by the way how big is your bathroom 20-30 g is way out of line to be honest unless your useing gold fictures
  3. If you're going to hire someone to do it for you, I'd definitely shop around...the price you were quoted does seem outrageous. If you get a few different quotes, you could probably shave 50% off the price. One easy way to get multiple quotes is to submit a request for estimates from a website like www.RemodelingInTown.com. There's a huge bank of contractors who look through all the projects everyone submits. Then a few of them can buy the rights to give you an estimate...so you know that the people contacting you can do the type of work you need. Within 48 hrs you'll have as many as 4 quotes to work from, and you won't have to take that weasel's word for it. It's easy and free for you.
