Two bathrooms have a total of 3 outlets. They all stopped working at the same time. How can I fix them?

I checked the breaker box and everything is okay. This happened once before several months ago. A coulple of days later, they all worked again. Is there something simple I can do to save the expense of hiring an electrician? They are not gfi outlets. There are no reset buttons on the outlets. Where could the gfi outlet be? I can't find it in the garage anywhere. It is not where the main breaker box is.

  1. It sounds like the GFI is tripped. It can either be a breaker or a receptacle. It has 2 buttons on it. A test and reset. Check for this on one of the receptacles or a breaker. Push test and then rest. The reset button should push in and hold. That should solve it.
  2. I don't know, if your breaker is still on, to me it sounds like a short. Since a short can cause a fire, i would call an electrician.
  3. you need to check to see if, on the outlet it self, is a gfi outlet they well have a small reset button on them some times they can get week may need to replace. They probaly tied all outlet to one usely it is the one with the gfi outlet
  4. Even without GFI outlets, they still can and should be GFI protected. Check your breaker box, they may have installed a GFI breaker. If the ground fault has tripped, it should reset similar to the outlets.
  5. First be sure you know which breaker controls those outlets and that it is not in the 'tripped' position. Flip 'off' then 'on' to reset it. Check that there is power out of the breaker when in the 'on' position. If there is no power out of the breaker then the breaker is faulty and should be replaced. If there is still no power to the outlets, turn off the breaker and check the wiring at the outlets. Most logically, the one closest to the breaker panel feeds the others and may have a loose connection. Check each one until the trouble is found. A simple fix to a frustrating intermittent problem. If any of this is confusing, consult a licensed electrician.
  6. Do you have a garage? In older homes a lot of electricians put one GFI outlet in the garage and feed all outside and bathroom outlets from that GFI. I would check that first and if not that you may have a faulty breaker, a faulty bus that the breaker attaches to or a loose connection.
  7. You probably have a GFI somewhere that is tripped, if a breaker isn't tripped. It could be in the garage or possibly an outside outlet?
