Challenge for bathroom floor designers in small NYC rent stabilized apartment..?
Hi, I'm one of the lucky ones that has been able to legally grandfather a rent stabilize an apartment. Yes, the landlord of the building wants to kill me and NO he will not go out of his way to do any repairs that are not critical or dangerous. My bathroom floor is only about 3x3 ft but the tile is so old and cracked, it is beyond repair. The landlord will not replace it nor will he allow me to remove the original tile. I don't have the time or energy to fight him. What could be a simple pretty solution to put on top of the ceramic tile that would withstand water from shower and tub area. I don't want to put tile on top of tile and I think carpet in bathrooms is horrible, I also have 2 cats and they will just rip it to shreds. Can anyone give me some smart durable advice? I would be very greatful. I'm open to all ideas. Thanks! :-)

- I would go with a nice washable throw rug. Something thick and soft.
- Why don't you just retile. Being that it's only a 3x3 it should be pretty quick and easy. Remove the toilet, lift the old tile, prepare the surface, spread the adhesive, replace with new tile, grout and re-install the toilet. I recommend getting a new wax ring for when you replace the toilet. Another suggest is to use the flexible type wooden mats. I used several them once on a rental apartment that had cheesy looking floors worked like a charm. I placed them side by side to cover up most of the floor. Pretty easy to keep clean too. Check out the link, similar to what I used but I purchase mine at bed bath and beyond http://www.crateandbarrel.com/search.aspx?query=wooden%20mat
