DESIGN IDEAS FOR BUILT INS AROUND A FIREPLACE?

In my family room that is 16' ceilings and very open concept to the kitchen and dining rooms, I have a pop out wall that has a fireplace built into it and a tv mounted above. I am looking to do some sort of shelving on the sides of this but not sure how to go about desgining. i was thinking white wood with shelves on top and maybe glass so i could put lighting... and then the bottoms cabinets for audio storage. any ideas as the room is cathedral

  1. Depends more on the immediate surroundings, like the fireplace, the color of the walls, etc., rather than the ceiling. I'd say don't make them a focal point, so don't make them white. Make them darker and let them fall into the background. Glass and lighting is a good idea, however, think of what you'll put on the shelves because if the top shelf will have things on it that will block the light, the glass shelving is useless.
