Can you be Artistic but not decorative?
I'm a poet and very creative person. I have a relative that draws and is very into interior decorating. She watches all these tv shows and duplicates much of it in her home. I'm aesthetically aware and have a vision of how I would like my home to be but I'm poor at the moment. because I can't decorate my home the way I want to, I just let it go and have nothing going on at the moment. everytime this relative visits, she has some sort of advice. I have told her I have a vision and her remark to me is "you call yourself an artist? If you were a true artist, you'd have your house decorated and wouldn't have issues hanging pictures, etc." Is this true? I'm very creative but haven't found anything that matches the visual picture in my head. I'm not one to put a picture up to cover a bare space. everything I have has to mean something. Are there other artists like myself who don't pay much attention to such things or is interior designing a mark of a true artist?

- Your relative doesn't know what she's talking about. It might help you if you draw the vision out on paper first, and then try to do it. or ask a friend to help you.
- possibly, with more of a fine art view of things besides the perspective design view of things, you may be over creative, and outdo another's ideas of design, not to worry of it, if you feel like painting or re decorating your life space, go for it as you chose, each to ones own, room color viewers: Debbie Travis Paint Selector http://debbietravis.canadiantire.ca/debbie.html Behr.com Explore Color http://www.behr.com/behrx/workbook/ Benjamin Moore Colour Viewer http://www.benjaminmoore.ca/colours/colour_viewer.aspx Sherwin williams paint color visualizer http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yourself/paint_colors/ Pittsburgh Paints- free viewer online http://www.ppg.com/ppgaf/visatglance/virtualpainter.htm SketchUp - Home&3dwarehouse, http://sketchup.google.com/ http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?q=+bedroom&btnG=Search&styp=m&reps=2 ..
- Having been in the art industry for over 25 years in various forms, I can relate to you perfectly. I can create beautiful things with my art to sell, however, right now my home is not yet what I envisioned it to be, due to lack of the amount of money it takes to do renovations. We have a Victorian building that was built in 1875. The ground level is a gallery, design studio and tea emporium, along with a small and growing museum of antique English china teapots. Upstairs is a Victorian apartment, approximately 1600 sq. ft., complete with crown molding, pocket doors, etc. We are approximately 40% of the way through the renovation which has meant, new electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, etc. Pedestal sinks don't come cheap! Neither do Victorian chandeliers! But, that is fine for now. It may take another year or two, but it will be beautiful when finished. You see, I, like you, have a vision. Best wishes!
- Your relative is just itchin for you or she to do something with your home that's all. One can't do anything if one doesnt have the paint or materials. some people wouldnt know how to decorate a box if they hadnt TRAINED. then there are people like my sister who can make a rose out of a paper napkin. Dont beat yourself up. you are an artist. She cant do what you can do.
- This made me laugh. I'm a professional artist and so's my husband, but our apartment is quite the mess. LOL I wouldn't pay her a bit of attention. I'm really into interior design too, but not with my place apparently. :)
