Why do some houses have two kitchens?

I've been looking at houses lately and I don't understand why a single family home would have two kitchens.

  1. For the slaves silly.
  2. Many times it is a provision for making a suite in the future. In older homes it was common to have a Summer kitchen when they used wood stoves to keep from heating the rest of the house.
  3. Years ago, before air conditioning, people had a summer kitchen which was near the back of the house where they could cook without heating up the main part of the house. This may have been use for canning of garden produce. Now, people want a second kitchen for entertainment purposes. There is often a smaller kitchen in basements so there is less running up and down stairs for the hosts. Another reason might be for couples who both enjoy cooking but don't want to share the space in a main kitchen. An extra kitchen might be needed if the owners are thinking of renting a portion of their home to a relative.
  4. Traditional Jewish homes have a kosher kitchen, which is used for kosher foods & cooking only.
