- Lumber liquidators has most of the major brand names and a nice showroom. Their floor is made up of many different that give you a better picture of what your floor will look like. Depending on how much you have in budget for the look that you want. I went with a prefinished oak floor and happy with it. You can go unfinished and stain it any shade you want. Finishing the floor can be costly but it is a better way to go as far as end product. I've been putting floors in for years. feel free to email allfloorsservice@yahoo.com if you have more questions. There are many things to consider that not everyone thinks about.
- Do you mean contemporary design? Modern usually refers to Mid-century Modern, though some are advocating a return to this more minimalist style. Design is constantly changing, so I think it is more important for you to choose furnishings because you like them. You can paint your walls anytime, but you will have to live with flooring for a long time. The links provide some current design trends. I don't really see a difference in floor colors as translating into modern or traditional. Since wood darkens with age, dark colors have been linked to traditional. However, if your furniture follows the current trend away from over-sized couches to sleek simple design, then a dark floor can provide contrast. In that case I like Chocolate Sapele (SKU: 10002414) for its smoothness, consistent coloring and slightly warm undertones. I also like African Safari Padouk (SKU: 10002959), though it has a strong red tone in the closeup.
- As an Interior Decorator, I have found that the color of the wood floors are not as important as the furniture and the accessories when decorating in modern design in concerned. I have created modern designed rooms with carpet, tile and all hues of wood floors. So, it mainly matters what you load in the room. Therefore, I would pick a floor that you absolutely love. I do have a client who had beautiful dark Brazilian cherry floors installed and after dealing with all the noticeable dust and pet hair, she had the floors stripped and re stained to a lighter finish. So, beware, dark floors show every spec more than lighter colors. I love the medium stain color of Gunstock in the Minwax stain choices as it goes with both light and dark furniture and decorative finishes.
- The key here is to get a 3/4" prefinished/stained hardwood. Any wood species can look modern, but I would steer clear of oak - way overused & connotes "country" no matter what. I'm also leery of bamboo. I particuarly like the look of hand scraped floors in modern design. I REALLY like reclaimed wood with modern, but that option isn't available at Lumber Liquidators. This decision is pretty much personal taste, I'd say, with the exceptions mentioned.
- Dark browns and blacks are kind of whats in right now and could be considered contemporary> I just installed some 4" wide dark stained birch from LL and it was very nice stuff. I believe the brand was Virginia Millworks.
