Do you need space around a toilet when you are making a universally designed bathroom?

If so, how much space? References are greatly appreciated. I am assuming there should be at least enough space for someone to be able to do a transfer from a wheelchair to the toilet. Any thoughts? If you are not going to answer thoughtfully, do not bother answering. Thank you!

  1. Yes you do. Inquire at a hospital plumbing supply about the space requirements and handicap rails for hospital plumbing fixtures.
