I need some bedroom design advice?
Hi everyone, Thanks for taking a look at my question. I am a guy and I just turned 16. I asked my parents, as part of my birthday gift, if I could have my bedroom remodeled (walls are baby blue from my younger years, old furniture etc. - it all needs to go!!!) - and they said yes. I don't have that much of a design "sense", if that's what you would call it, so I'm looking for help here. I'm unsure of the exact dimensions of the room, but my house was built in 1986 if that helps. I'd say the room is about the size of the interior of a one car garage. It also has one window. My uncle had a new double sized mattress left over from his guest bedroom when he sold his house, so he gave that to me and I am waiting until I get some advice before I put it in my room. I want my new bedroom to have a bold and "manly" look, while being modern, simple, and clean. I found a nice bedspread, and I would like to design the room around it, but I want to choose the right paint so that the room doesn't look like a cave (bedspread here: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11026874 ) . My floor is also a beige-ish shag carpet, if that helps. Any opinions on paint colors for the wall, lighting options, headboard options, bedroom furniture (computer desk, bureau, mirror), accents, and the like would be greatly appreciated. I do like brushed metal as well - I might be replacing some lightswitch covers and outlet covers with brushed nickel, silver etc. covers - any opinions?. Thanks so much! Picture the room as a square in your head. The door is at the bottom left of the square, there are two double closet doors ( [][] [][] ) on the right side of the square that take up most of the wall, one window on the wall opposite from the door in the middle of the room. The ceiling is 8 ft tall, the room is 13.5 X 13.5 feet. I don't really have a budget, I just want the room to look nice. But I don't want to go out and spend thousands of dollars. Yes, the mattress has a box spring.

- You did the right thing by starting with a bedspread that you really like. Does it have more than on color in it? If so, pick out your favorite color to paint your walls. Since you like brushed metal you might want to look for other accessories like your mirror and lights in that same metal. Take your time, look around, and get only what you really like. You might want to look at some of the decorating sites online like HGTV. Have fun.
- Coupla questions. Can you measure the room please and note where the windows door and closet are (Also if they are Single double left right center of the wall). By shag do you mean a high pile or a fluffy loop. This is a shag http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canopy-Shag-Rug-Fresh-Ivory/11078400 This is a high pile http://www.inteletex.com/adminfiles/NewsImages/July05/icb6b541d4hd-a.jpg What kind of budget are you looking at. Is the mattress a set (with box spring) or just the mattress. See if you can do a floor plan Http://www.floorplanner.com if not just give us the numbers. This is a to scale image of your room http://www.flickr.com/photos/44515431@N06/5141856044/ 3D rendering http://www.flickr.com/photos/44515431@N06/5141251389/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/44515431@N06/5141856224/in/photostream/ Ignore the colors... Here is what I suggest get 2 matching Armoires http://www.colvinfurniture.com/images/Computer%20armoire%20closed.JPG to flank either side of the window. One for clothing the other for your computer and electronics. Between them get a long low bench. This will hold the TV or cushions for friends to sit on. Under the bench you can use as storage if you need. One great thing to use for this is the small over the stove type cabinets available at Ikea. On either side of the be put the tall cubes on top put a shelf between the cubes and mount lighting under the shelf. 2 Ottomans at the foot of the bed will be additional seating for friends. A runner rug on the floor in front of the bed will help pull your design together and save the carpet. As far as colors...With the beige rug I would look for a bed set with black grey and beige. Furnishings in the Ebony color like the armoire I posted. With bedding that has some beige. http://www.target.com/Room-Essentials-Black-Stripe-Comforter/dp/B002YC4C24/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&searchView=grid5&keywords=stripe%20bed&fromGsearch=true&sr=1-8&qid=1288755809&rh=&searchRank=target104545&node=1038576%7C1287991011&searchSize=30&sessionID=181-2706285-3808761&searchPage=1&searchNodeID=1038576%7C1287991011&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&frombrowse=0 I would do the wall in a deep beige color with black trim.
- A bed similar to this one http://www.lussoliving.com/Common/Product/American-Drew-Sterling-Pointe-Panel-Headboard-Black-181-31XB.htm would look great. Brushed nickel will go fantastically with that spread. You'll want things to be very rectangular shaped - nothing too curvy or fancy. Very square black bed skirt. Kind of mission style simplicity but shiny black for dresser, side table, etc. The thing is, you need another color in the palette - but I'm not sure what. Originally I was thinking of a soft gray for the walls, but now I'm thinking maybe a soft yellow or lima bean green - nothing too bright and nothing too girly. Or you could do something like getting a Morris style chair (shiny black) with cranberry red cushions and a few pillows on the bed (if you want) in the same color, and make your curtains that color too. Have some touches of that color in things like the posters you put up, etc. You might even paint a thin line of that color about 2 inches from the top of the wall. Then go back to light gray or something else somewhat neutral for the main wall colors.
- Your bed should be centered under your window with a nightstand on each side. Your dresser & a mirror over it should be on the left wall. A computer desk can be to the right of the door with a TV mounted over it. I think you may have room for a bench at the end of the bed & a small chair on the left side of the room between your nightstand & dresser. It's a nice size room. I would paint the window wall a dark charcoal. The other walls can be 2 shades lighter. Your ceiling should be 2 shades lighter than that. Have crisp white trim & closet doors. If you can, get crown molding, & that should be white too. For your window, get a natural woven wood roman shade in a light color. (Check Lowe's) The drapes should be mounted on a brushed nickel decorative rod. Mount the rod as close to the ceiling as possible. Get drapes in a subtle gray stripe that are a grommet top. (Check JC Penneys) The rod should be extended from the window frame at least 4 inches from the edge of the window frame, to expose most of the windows. The drapes won't be open & closed, so you can just get single width panels. For lighting, check Pottery Barn for brushed nickel swing arm lamps. You will mount these over your nightstands. You will also want brushed nickel "buffet" size lamps on your dresser, & another task lamp on your computer desk. For the bench at the end of the bed, get leather or leather-look. Your accent chair might be red. Accent pillos on the bed - red. Your mirror should be silver. (Don't get the mirror that comes with the dresser - get a separate one with a silver frame). For the furniture, check Value City (vcf.com) They have a lot of great looking furniture & not bad quality for very little money. I bought my sons furniture there, living room & bedroom, & he loves it. I also have some pieces from there. For paint, take one of your pillow shams to Sherwin Williams & have them help you choose just the right shades. The colors I'm thinking would be good are: window wall - #7067 Cityscape. Other walls - #7065 Argos. Ceiling - #7063 Nebulous White. Add some wall art on both sides of your dresser that incorporates grays, black, white & red. I want to thank you, young man, for a very clear & intelligent question. Well crafted, polite, & respectful You deserve a great new room that you will enjoy for many years to come!!! My best to you!!! - Paula
