interior design/ hardware knowledge?

What is the name to the piece of wood that you can put around a room to seperate the walls in half? Similar to a baseboard or molding.....and also is it recomended to paint it, should I use 3 diff colors- one of top, bottom and the rail around the room? and should it go light on top then dark? what would be the general order?

1. I think you are refering to chair rail. You can paint or stain it, your call. I have stained and varnished to look like oak in my kitchen but white painted in the dining room. Your color arrangement is up to you! I've seen wonderful rooms with dark color above white or light colored and vice versa. Unless it's a large room, I'd be tempted to paint the chair rail to match the lower wall or something just a couple of shades darker or lighter but keeping in the same color family.
