interior design debate?

my parents are getting divorced, (plz dont waste charachters on that) and my mom is moving out, i plan on staying with my much nicer dad, but in the case that my mom takes me captive, she wants to decorate her new place like a beach house. one prblem : WE LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF OHIO i am trying to convince her to go for a more apropriate design scheme, freestyle, but with my good taste (i want to take over the project) make it just look beutiful, and even if i stay with my dad, he will need redecorate the bright-green-and-floral master bedroom, and convert my sisters bedrooms etheir into more square footage for me, or a lounge/ loft. and our kitchen needs a major makover. we (my dad and i) are teck geeks, I AM A FEMALE and i neeeedddd heeellllllppppp plllleeeeaaasssee PM, yea, my mom grew up on a beach, soooo, shes just really confused, and no, we live 2 hrs from lake erie

1. I have a hard time with decor not matching the surroundings. So I am with you on this one. If you don't live somewhere overlooking a lake then the beach theme is going to be awkward unless its limited to a sunroom or something. Paint is your most economical way to make a statement. Decorate with a few oversized things like floor to ceiling curtains, and oversized art, large furniture versus a bunch of small nic nacs and furniture pieces. Keep it clean and modern, just as important find a place for everything in the room. If its the living room then add baskets for magazines or dvd's, if its the bedroom then clear the dressers except for a couple of inspirational books bedside and a lamp, tissues, etc. My daughter didnt have much money to put into art lately so she bought large paint canvas' and glued scrapbook paper onto it and it looked just like abstract art. very modern very cheap. Balance is key in any room. Add feminine as well as masculine touches to everything. If you re-vamp your Dad's bed then add a charcoal gray or chocolate brown solid comforter but be sure to balance it with femine and maybe use a pastel colored sheet. You sound saavy you'll figure it out. Your Mom may have always wished she had a beach house but never could with your Dad and wants it now. If so, let her go, shell always crave it otherwise. Kinda like getting married on the courthouse steps with no fancy dress. Youll always crave that big wedding day. Good luck to you.
