How do modern designs differ from designs in the past few years?

- We've been in the post-modern era since the seventies. What that means to me is simply that there are just so many concepts of design and aesthetics which have been presented it is almost impossible to do something which owes nothing to anyone who went before. Thus most modern design can be as austere as modernist design, but it''s usually slightly more ornamental and unafraid to quote or appropriate good motifs.
- What kind of design are you thinking of? Type design has seen a resurgence of the serif and the decorative script, especially with the advent of new technologies like OpenType which allows for contextual pairs and triples. Illustration is constantly changing and is far more varied taking in digital technology as well as more traditional styles, although in editorial illustration there has recently been less emphasis on the vector type of illustration that was popular at the turn of the century with a strong return to analogue materials – pen, pencil.
