Why is it alot of places for rent in guatemala has bathrooms outside?

Hello. Why is it that when i looked at places for rent alot of them have bathrooms outside? Is that common in Guatemala or am I just being left with places that some people skipped? What cities in Guatemala are cool?

1. It's Guatemala, what do you expect?
2. Guatemala plumbing is different than what we're used to in the US. It's much smaller and the use of communal bathrooms is common in underdeveloped areas. Most places in Guatemala City do not have communal bathrooms. As far as visiting cities, any of the cities around Lago Atitlan are nice, Antigua is great and very safe, Guatemala City is interesting, Zacapa, Monterrico (on the coast) and Coban up north are all very nice destinations.
