How can I get into Dreyfoos School of the Arts, in Digital Media & Communications?

My name is Lily, and I'm currently a freshman in high school, and I audition last year for theatre, but it was so competitive, I didn't get in, and so this year I'm auditioning for digital media, and communications, but it's going to be harder for me, since I'm going into 10th, and that means my audition score would be a 4.50. For Communications I will have to prepare and present a NEWS or FICTION STORY. I will be given paper and pencil/pen as well as have access to a computer. I must develop a idea in the appropriate structure, either for news or creative writing, OR prepare and present an original SPEECH, between 60 and 90 seconds in length, and I may deliver the speech from memory or may use note cards. During the audition, I'll have the option of preparing and presenting ONE of the following, based on a topic which will be announced at the audition: a speech, a treatment and storyboard, or a story. The topic will be from a photo, image, phrase, or quotation. I'll have 45 minutes to complete this process. I will also show them my best work, and they will interview me. During the interview with adjudicators, I'll be evaluated not only on my selected work (speech, news or fiction story, or treatment and storyboard) and my sample work, but also on my communication skills during the face-to-face meeting with the panel of judges. NOW for digital media, I'll select a sequence of images to create a Storyboard of 5 photographs from a group of 29 photographs and write a text to accompany each of the photographs, I'll then have 40 minutes to do it. Also I'll have to create a series of 10 Digital Photographs on campus using a digital camera, exploring an assigned theme related to the elements and principles of design. I'll have 60 minutes to do it. The problem is that I know nothing about photography, and I'm a good writer, but I don't think I'm a great writer. What should I do, and please help me! Lily XOXO P.S.- I pick these categorys, because I think these will get me a better chance of getting in Dreyfoos, and I'm interested in these categorys. Thanks! =]

  1. Okay, I'm pretty sure this is Lyly F., but anyways... I attend Dreyfoos in the Communications program, and unfortunately, they made it harder to get in. When I auditioned for 9th grade last year, you only needed a 4.0 to get in (I got a 4.875). Getting a 4.5 is hard, but not impossible. A major part of the audition is your sample work. I would recommend bringing in something risky or controversial, but well-written. What happens is: you get to the school, there will be about 30 people auditioning with you, you go to a classroom, and the Communications dean tells you about the audition. You will be very surprised by how many people are unprepared (ex. no sample work, no writing utensils, dressed inappropriately, etc.). After you finish, they will call you in the order that you checked in for your interview. Tou will be interviewed by 3 teachers that have your sample work and work that you just did. They will ask you a series of questions like, your favorite book, hobbies, and MOST IMPORTANTLY: ********WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO TO DREYFOOS?******* I would recommend writing down sample questions and answers as practice. Since you say that you write well, I would recommend writing a news story, but EVERYONE chooses the news story. If I wanted to stand out, I would do a speech because hardly anyone chooseds to do a speech. Last year, there was an extra part to the audition. Everyone had to write a short story based off a quote in 20 minutes. Just be prepared and practice, practice, practice. Good luck, and maybe I'll see you in class next year. :)
