What do you think of the gift exchange of every day items that takes place in japan?

What do you think of the gift exchange of everyday items in japan? this is very common in japan and instead of expensive gifts ,normal everyday items are given as gifts,very frequently actually =] ,items such as , packs of salmon,cans of juice and soy sauce are given as gifts. what do you think of this and have you ever received a gift like this? would you like to or have you ever given one? what would you like to receive instead of the usual gifts people give you? some towels? some good meat? give me you opinion please =] what do you think of this strange but unique custom =]x i wasnt insulting anyone,i was asking for an opinion and i did not mention that i didnt do this,but us westerners dont really do this custom. which is why i want some opinions=] please refrain from rude,insulting or vulgar comments please people.

2. It's nether strange nor unique. Just because you don't do it, doesn't mean other families don't! My next door neighbours sent their son 'round with some dentastix for the dog just an hour ago. We gave them some wood. My friends and I are always visiting eachother with cans of food/sauces etc.
