I'm trying to decide the best color to paint my living room. Someone with some interior design knowledge help?

I'm trying to decide the best color to paint my living room. I have couches that are microsuede and my carpet is a beige color. The color of my couches is a (down home) color according to the sherwin williams colorsnap app. Which is basically a darker beige color than my carpet. Can someone with some interior design expertiece please give me some suggestions on a good color. I would like something that would make the room look bigger. I'm a 31 year old bachelor and I really want to give my house a homier look and not such a bachelor pad look. Also might be trying to sell the house in a few years so any suggestions based on this information would be greatly appreciated

  1. use a warm brown on 1 wall for accent and find a light tan or beige for your base color on the other walls, use white on your trim and accessories and watch it come to life
  2. I find that choosing colors is a very personal choice. A color that I like could make you sick after looking at it every day. It sounds like you have a very neutral palette going on. You could go with a monochromatic scheme or you could add a big punch of color by painting the walls. Right now the browns and burnt oranges are very popular. You could tie both of those in with your neutral carpet and sofa. You could paint the walls a good shade of orange/cinnamon, use some brightly colored pillows, and use dark espresso side tables. You could get some good ideas from the Pottery Barn. It sounds like you are going to have some big decisions to make. If you are unsure what shade of Orange/Cinnamon to use go to your local paint store and ask them which shade is the most popular right now. Make sure you paint some one the wall and look at it under different light (morning, noon, evening, and night) If you don't have many windows you may have to go several shades lighter because a dark paint may be too dark in the evening and at night.
  3. Pick up some interesting clay pots and bowls. You can get these anywhere thrift shops are the best places though. http://www.sewerhistory.org/images/mi/mim/sewer_vase.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/232/501292041_d7c93f1bdf.jpg?v=0 Then pull the clay color for your wall. http://www.myperfectcolor.com/Benjamin-Moore-1221-Potters-Clay-p/mpc0005593.htm Cream colored accents for throw pillows and window panels and lamps should match the rug. Get the curtains and pillows in a textured fabric. A few wood shelves to display your pots. You want a ledge shelf with a thick front. http://www.myshelfs.com/floating-shelves/floatingwallledgeshelf.html Trim paint in off white with a slight grey tone. http://www.myperfectcolor.com/Benjamin-Moore-HC-170-Stonington-Gray-p/mpc0006983.htm Now you need to set your style with a pattern. The clay pots can bring you to Native, Mexican, Tuscan or modern decor. A throw blanket will define this without overwhelming the room .. Native - http://www.amazon.com/Kokopelli-Native-American-Decorative-Pillow/dp/B002SKXZ52 http://www.amazon.com/Kokopelli-Native-American-Tapestry-Blanket/dp/B002RBJJIE/ref=pd_sim_k_1 Mexican - http://www.amazon.com/Authentic-Mexican-Falsa-Yoga-Blanket/dp/B000VJZ8PM/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1264377583&sr=8-34 Modern - http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Cream-Grey-Throw-Blanket-and-Decorative-Pillows/4447478/product.html Once you pick a throw follow through with wall hangings or paintings to match your choice.
  4. When homes are staged before going on the market, walls are painted neutral so prospective buyers can envision their decor in the space. Neutral for your living room would be bland and unappealing. For ex. these before and after staging makeovers. http://www.hgtv.com/decorating/before-and-after-makeovers-from-the-stagers/pictures/index.html To complement the beige choose a warm earth tone such as Clary Sage or Svelte Sage. Select a living room similar to yours, enter different colors and drag and drop onto walls, accents, trim and furniture or you can upload a photo of your living room, also shows two coordinating colors. https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer/
