What is an appropriate decoration to paint on a chocolate colored wall of the staircase?

Our wall is a lovely chocolate colored wall leading up to the staircase. I was thinking of putting gold paint for the color of the design, since our stair handles are chocolate with small hand-painted gold streaks all around it. I don't know what type of design to paint on it though. My mom wants me to paint something on it, with me wanting to be an interior designer and all. I was thinking about something more contemporary but, me being a visual learner, I want to see how this decoration can be and should be dome. Thanks so much for your help. :)

1. It depends very much on the decor of the rest of the house. Pick something you like and duplicate it so you are carrying the theme through.
2. Wip out your digital camera, take a picture, print a few color copies, break out some gold paint and play with it. Then try some colors. This is less costly then experimenting on the wall itself. Lay out your best results and leave them for a few days or even weeks. Sometimes we fall in love with a design, but when we come back to it a week later, we realize that it just doesn't work in that space, but one of our other original ideas does. If your favorite design holds the test of time, then go with it.
