1. One innovation over the last few years has been a switch from thru hole to surface mounted components. This has allowed faster automated assemby and a more compact circuit board. New advances are looking at organic or flexible boards, where all of the circuits are printed onto a flexible sheet of plastic. Since the "board" is not rigid, many new shapes are possible.
