What great innovations would happen in next 5 years so that I should change my Laptop ?

May be larger hard disk , more memory , larger screen , more USB drives , faster graphics accelerator card ? All this I don't need. I am quite happy with my Sony Laptop which has Blue Ray drive so that I can backup all my videos also. Can some expert guide me what new path breaking technology is likely to be invented for Desktops or Laptops in next 5 years ?

  1. all what you have mentioned
  2. year 2012
  3. I reckon if you could surf the web on a TV would you need a Laptop? Convergence of Computing into Plasma TVs will probably render the laptop obsolete in 5 years. Its already happening with Hard drives built into DVD Recorders etc
  4. Solid-state disks (SSD) look pretty cool. They're a (sort of) new form of non-moving hard drive that get amazing speeds when compared to the average hard drive. Using an SSD can really improve boot time and application startup/use. Also, touch screens and tablets are looking pretty cool. You might want to try out a Wacom tablet. But for right now if you want to try out some new (software) inventions and remixes, I recommend you try out some LiveCDs of various Linux distros. These disks have some pretty cool features that are fun to play around, such as wobbly window desktop effects that wobble when you move the window.
  5. A lab in the UK is working on making something similar to an LCD screen that's flexible, as far as I know they've got it to the point where it can do black and white but not a lot more. One they manage that we'll have laptops that we can roll up to the size of a newspaper, in theory anyway, it'd mean a need of an external hard drive and stuff like that. But all technicalities aside that's about the only "innovation" that should be finnished in the next few years. Hopefully.
  6. USB 3.0 will not take 5 years to obsolete your computer, or relegate it to a second hand rose... We should see USB 3.0 capable laptops by March 2010... USB 3.0 graphic tablets, USB 3.0 1080p webcams, USB 3.0 Solid State Drives (SSD), USB 3.0 game controllers, USB 3.0 printers (finally enough communication speeds for printers to instantly cancel a print job... But there is an adapter that will let you use the fast devices at half their speed if you do not have a true USB 3.0 connector/capable computer... http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/buffalo-offers-usb-3-for-laptops-with-new-express-card-2009129/ JR
