How do I decide on cabinet, sink, tile, etc for our new bathrooms?

I have no decorating experience at all. We are going to hire someone who came recommended to redo our two bathrooms. I could never go to a Home Improvement store and pick out a sink, cabinet, paint color, etc and have it all look good together. Is it ok to give our guy some pictures from magazines? Will he shop with me, or is it generally done by the homeowner alone? What about sizes and measuring, will he tell me what to look for? Help, I'm lost? What are the steps usually?

  1. ok so buy guy im guessing you u mean like an interior designer that works in bathrooms and kitchens or something like that (you're probably lost its ok) but don't worry all fo things you said he's gonna do. he's probably gonna give you like some rough layout of what he's gonna do or a sketch or atleast tell you and ur gonna be like wow that's great. he'll pick outa sink cabinet paint color and the rest AND have it look good. yeah it's great if you give him pictures that's what he wants. he wants to have some idea of your style and what he can do in your bathroom with your style. he'll shop with you, he wont make you do it alone. or atleast he should because that's what generally happens. and heavens no you dont need to do any measurements dont stress out IT'LL BE OK
  2. 1. Go through design mags (like you said) and pull out what you like- full rooms, maybe in one you just like the cabinets, or the room color- put these in a binder - make notes on them wiht a sharpie and keep it with you. 2. Decide what you need in the space- more room? a bigger counter, better lighting..whatever it may be. 3. Go to Lowes or wherever you want and talk to someone. Just consider this meeting one for information. Be honest with them..thats what they are there for- to help you! Have a list of what you want to accomplish and ask THEM what you need to do to make that happen. (ie. what measurements, pictures , etc) You will be under no obligation here. I would go on a weeknight when there are less people and you can take up a lot more of his/her time. Oh and in the paint section grab the brochres they have a lot with great color combos that you can go through and choose 4. After you have asked all of your questions, no matter how dumb you think they are- they are not! And you have written down all of your notes, seen the cabinets you love etc., taken all the brochures, and put them in your binder- Go home and sleep on it. 5. Take all of your measurements- pictures etc that they needed from you and put that in your binder 6. Now, when you are ready, go back with all of your gathered info, and clear head and make your choices. It should be clear at this point and much less overwhelming. 7. Enjoy your new space :)
  3. I guess it really comes down to how the inside of your bathrooms are decorated and designed. If you are more concerned with quality, I would recommend Grohe faucets for the bathroom sinks and Toto toilets (if you are replacing the toilets) as well. They rarely clog and some even come with seat warmers!
