- The Republic of Guinea in northwest Africa is certainly a prime example of a country strongly influenced by French colonists. Let's take a look at influences that are indisputably of French origin: While a number of locally-bred languages and their dialects are widely used by indigenous citizenry, the French language continues to reign supreme in that country's courts system and in all matters relating to global outreach programs. The official language used in national correspondence to the outside world is French. Recent civil turbulence is documented and explained by the Army which happens to remain in control at the moment---in French. Broadcast journalism is spoken in French, contracts stipulating terms of cooperation between other countries and Guinean interests representing the exploitation of their resources, all are routinely in French. For all of the past quarter century and many years prior, the French Parliament was the final authority to which Guinean leaders answered, ceding control to France. Corrupt Guinean officials are widely known to have set up banking accounts in France and they frequently own apartments and homes there, vacationing under the guise of attending to official business. France is the preferred country of choice when it comes to Guineans going outside their own land in order to gain a university education. This fact, alone, nurtures the cultural connection between the two countries. Public dining establishments, I'm told by friends doing business there, exhibit a strong French influence not unlike Vietnam, another formerly French stronghold thanks to earlier colonialism. Strong trade alliances exist between the mother countries and their adopted weak sisters. France continues to benefit by being first in line when certain African nations put their natural resources on sale. China is making inroads but France is the more trusted alliance partner at this juncture. All oil ventures are at least viewed by France's big oil player, "Total." My own thinking is that African oil and natural gas will be hailed as the planet's next great source of this most valuable commodity, thus ensuring France will continue its hallowed tradition as the go-to player at any global assembly convened for the purposes of deciding on issues of world peace and UN protectionism and/or sanctions.
