Would you consider Los Angeles and southern California a cosmopolitan capital or a slice of the third world?

I cannot give my own informed opinion as I have neither visited nor lived in California. California is certainly a state that seemingly symbolizes globalization. On the one hand, the state has the reputation of being a centre of technological innovation, progressive liberal politics, and multiculturalism. However, there also exists the image that southern California has extensive pollution, high crime, a very unequal wealth distribution, ethnic tension, and massive illegal immigration. Some say that California is a picture of what the United States will become. If so, should the rest of the country be encouraged or gravely concerned?

  1. IDK come down and check it out for yourself
  2. All of those things are true. The LA region is very cosmopolitan and diverse, and has several significant industries including movies, TV, and technology. Of course there are urban problems like crime, but those are found in every major city in the world, and in the case of LA, are completely overblown by the media.
  3. Been to both and me I'd call it a schit magnet on the scale of D.C. and Chicago.
  4. If the US 'will become' California, we should give some thought as to how to cope with whatever changes 'will be'. The best thing we can do is begin to limit immigration. I know the arguments...we're a nation of immigrants, and "You're here and now you want to slam the door behind you." True enough, but given the situation we should be a nation of 'invited immigrants', and how about "First come, first served." Since that won't happen, we are doomed to become an over populated, environmentally depleted 'Blade Runner' nightmare, most likely mal-governed by some kind of incompetent, fascisti regime with a 'Beck-like' moron fronting for a small group of power hungry weasels. My advice? In the next 20 years, learn to speak spanish, join one of those TV churches, learn to love tofu, invest heavily in 'teabags' and accept poverty and homelessness as normal. Resistance is futile. You will be absorbed!
