Artistic people or people good at home design/decor...colour advice plz..?

I'm going to paint my wooden beams. The beams are in my bedrooms and a harsh lookin black at present. So, ive decided to do brown (i think). Should i go for a dark or a lighter brown? Shiney or matt? My walls are neutral light shades. Any specific colour examples most welcome. thanks

  1. how about matt dark brown with cream/ hessian surrounds for the walls? my bedroom is done in black and white and chrome for e.g where my head of the bed that wall is black the side walls are white and the foot of the bed is like got a chimney breast effect with no fire place there . those walls are black with the middle bit white
  2. They should harmonise with your wall colour. You are right to go with brown, but I would advise getting a sample of the brown that went into your neutral wall colour, and starting with that. Get samples of brown, paint them onto pieces of cardboard and put them against the wall where you will be actually painting, so beside the beams, and go with the one you feel harmonises best.
