Decorating my living room ? HELP.?
I am completely redecorating my living room (carpet, sofas, paint the lot ) and i decided to start by painting the walls. As i have no starting point in the room like a 'sofa' i have no idea what to color to paint it i also suck at choosing colors and the whole interior design thing. However i do know that i would like the carpet to be some sort of dark color like black/brown so i really need help in figuring out the colors of my walls. The room has 4 walls - ( one which is a fireplace wall - sticks out- could be used a feature wall ?) the room has a lot of light as it has a large sliding door which leads to the conservatory. PS. I have tried those website where u can decorate a 'living room' to get ideas but they don't seem to help at all so Im just looking for someone who can give me like 2 colors that i could paint the room one; for the possib feature wall ? and one other color for the rest of the walls. This should be fun for the decorators as u can choose whatever color u want- just as long as i get my living room finished. thanks.

- with a brown carpet I would do the walls a cream or biscuity brown colour, and wallpaper the fireplace wall with a paper that includes cream and brown
- if you get a good emotional reaction to certain colors, then i suggest you go with those. a color can remind you of someone you love, or an unforgettable vacation, or a period of your life from when you were younger, etc., etc. what is your style? do you like casual? contemporary? casual-contemporary? knowing this would help
- Have the walls a light cream colour so that the room isn't darkened too much by the dark carpet. Concerning the feature wall, I would opt for a light butter cream colour that does not contrast too much with the rest of the walls.
- Your best going with a nice cream colour, or a yellow such as magnolia. These colours go with just about anything, brighten up a room and make it look modern.
- I don't have a lot of advice, but I just wanted to share that when we moved into our house it had dark dark purple carpets. I was never a fan, but we decided to deal with them until we could put in hardwood floors. However, it was so horrible... we have kids and every single tiny little crumb showed up in contrast to the carpet. I just wanted to pass that one because I swear I had to vacuum every single day if I wanted the place to look clean. It might not be an issue for you depending on the color and type of carpet you are thinking, but the dark colored carpet became my arch-enemy!!
- First, get a handle on your personal style. Here are a few: Urban contemporary: Colors in the black, gray, metallic, white range. Glass tables. Very sophisticated but rather cold. Cottage cosy: Floral designs in curtains and upholstery. Colors in the pink, yellow, and green range. Ivory or cream background colors. Comfortable things like footstools, small tables, floor lamps for reading light, brass accessories. Mom-and-dad traditional: (That's what we have.) Wing chairs, book cases, Oriental area rugs over gold-colored carpet, brass floor lamps, sofa upholstered in a dark red Persian print, fruitwood coffee table, brass fireplace screen and tools. Family room ambiance suitable for kids: Chairs and sectional sofa with rugged upholstery, TV console, medium-colored nylon carpet that won't show dirt or stains easily, low tables for play, books and toys stored in baskets on shelves. Colors: Warm colors give a welcoming atmosphere. Light, dulled-down ocher, cream, or even peach would reflect light nicely. Your feature wall could be a more vivid version of your other walls' color. For your carpet, I'd recommend a medium shade of warm brown or deep gold. You could take some photos of your living room as it is, and ask people's advice from those. Sometimes, paint departments have a person who knows something about color harmony.
