Is our granite edge really a big deal?

Our contractor made a mistake and had the fabricator give us a bullnose edge when we wanted an eased (more square) edge. I feel like bullnose is a modern look and we are going for a more vintage/bungalow style kitchen to fit with the rest of our house and decor. Our contractor will do our hardwoods at no cost if we stick with the bullnose (cheaper for him than to buy us a new slab) and it would save us $2,000. But I'm afraid I'll regret it and never be truly happy with our kitchen after putting in months of planning the design and heaps of money. Should I hold tight, delay the project, and request the eased edge on a new slab? Or take the savings instead and hope I am still happy with the outcome?

  1. well, you know you best. are you the sort of person who will ruminate and fume and seethe because it's not what you want and let your disappointment ruin your appreciation of your remodel? will you constantly voice your disappointment to all who hear and eventually begin to annoy and drive away your family, friends and partner? Will a delay in replacing the counter inconvenience you more than you enjoy having what you want? or are you able to let it go and accept the trade off of a timely finish and a discounted price? If you're not going to be happy w/ the contractor's suggestion and you'll make your own life and the lives of those around you miserable because it's not what you want then the $2000 savings isn't worth it. this is about you knowing yourself and your limits. You're the only one who can know what you can live with. What I would or would not do might not be what you would choose. BTW: aesthetically, bullnose is definitely a MCM or even an Art Deco look. if you have a 20's or 30's Art Deco vibe going then you can get away with the bullnose edge. but it sounds like you're going more Craftsman or Prairie era and if everything else in your kitchen is along that line (Frank Lloyd Wright-esque) then you'll want the more sqared off edge. your average person won't notice the difference.
  2. If the rest of the kitchen comes together you probably won't notice the edge as much as you do now, because you know about it and are focusing on it. I would be tempted to take the cash, but without seeing it, it is hard to tell.
  3. Only you will know the answer to this. If this is a custom dream home you plan on staying in, then change it. If it is a home you are only going to live in for a year or two, then leave it. If little things annoy you, then change. If you are easy going and will go with the flow, not needing everything perfect in your own mind, then leave it. It sounds to me like you want to change it, but others around you do not want to change it and they are trying to convince you to their line of thinking. If this is the case, then have him change it. You obviously have a strong conviction to your desired decor design and you have full rights to having it. When building a house you put a lot of time and energy into your plans, and if you are like me, you do not want to have someone's mistake ruin it..personally it would annoy me and eat at me..I would have the mistake corrected..my hubby would leave it as it is not important to him. $2000 is a drop in a bucket when it comes to the money a new house costs...weigh your choices, sleep on it, and decide in the morning. Either way you are making the correct decision.
