I need unique gift ideas for an 8 year old boy?

My nephew will be turning 8 next month and I am having a really hard time thinking of a gift he will really like. The problem I run into is that his parents buy him everything - I think he has at least one new item EVERY time I see him. So I need it to be something unique that they probably wouldn't think to get him. Right now his obsession is football. I appreciate any suggestions!

1. Does he like to read? He might like the 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing' series. It's older, so his parents probably haven't gotten it for him yet. Depending on how much you want to spend, you could get him a certificate for some kind of lessons. Karate, gymnastics? Maybe a membership to your local children's museum? Another thing that would be good are some art supplies, kids that age love to be creative. If you want to tick off his parents you could get him some kind of musical instrument!
