Changing the color of wood in an inexpensive way?

I saw on HGTV that you can spray paint wood another color. My bathroom cabinet is so outdated. I wanted to spray the handles from gold to silver and change the color of the light wood to a darker color. sort of like this kind of color: http://www.housetohome.co.uk/imageBank/d/dark-wood-kitchen.jpg I am inexperienced with this and do not have a lot of money. so is there a way to do this?
