Modern Country Kitchen?

I am moving to a farm house soon and have a hard time finding items to furnish my kitchen. I'm use to more contemporary items yet the home is a in the country a remodeled farm house. Someone suggested to do a "modern country" kitchen theme but can't find anything.I don't like traditional country items such as roosters and apples or primitive decor, etc - it's not "me". I guess what I'm looking for are kind of straight edges, a home-y feel, pieces that don't match but go together, prints and patterns, one or two colors - anyone have any ideas, pictures, suggestions? Something along these lines ... I think ... http://www.countryporch.com/kitchen-decorating-themes/somerset.asp **Please if you're just going to respond with something silly or insulting, please do not respond at all...*

  1. I had to change from modern decor to more of a country look also. I don't have any specfic ideas for you but a suggestion. I went to "country chic decor" websites and magazines and found a lot of ideas to work off of. It kind of broadened my ideas about colors that went well together and the 'feel' I was looking for. I'm not suggesting you have to go with country chic just that it may help to give you some ideas to work with. Hope this helps. : )
  2. Congrats! I hope you enjoy your new farmhouse. The link is beautiful. Inspiring. I picture a darj wiid butcher block table with white legs. Mishmash of wooden chairs (local flea markets?) with navy blue cushions. You can easily do "classy country" and not do "trashy country" (no offense intended to those who enjoy roosters in their kitchens!!). I would have my bottom cupboards matching the wood on the butcher block table and my upper cabinets a distressed white. Imagine a small glass block backsplash in navy blue, and a large clear glass jar on your counter, full of lemons. Beautiful white shutters on the windows and a glass of wine in your hand!
  3. Modern country now a days can be sleek not cluttered the choice is in the colors, whites, cream golds, pale yellows and a whole range of greens. Also checks and some small flower prints.I like checks and stripes together myself. My kitchen is basically all white with touches of yellow and black.I don't call it country but some of my friends do.It has straight lines mostly.I think you have the right idea there. But remember when you move into your new place use your things differently in the new setting and you may be surprised how nice it can be,without spending for a whole new look.
  4. I would go with burnt orange kind of cabinets with black and orange countertop (granite would look great if you hve the money). Because black compliments burnt orange really well and you hve two colors ;)
  5. Congrats on your new home! You're on the right track, going with cleaner lines and less fuss than most think of when doing "country". What colors do you like? You can adapt nearly any color scheme to work so don't let the "theme" back you into a color you're not crazy about! Scour yard sales, auctions, tag sales for a accessories and some furniture pieces. Minor repairs, a new coat of paint and new hardware do wonders! We painted all our cabinets (painted cabinets seem more "country") and most of the walls in cream. Husband made my counters out of wood planks and stained them oak with a tung oil finish and they are beautiful! And they are holding up well. It's been about 4 years since we put them in and they could use another coat of tung oil but overall, I'm quite happy with them. We have a country but not busy print wallpaper on the back splash area and the soffit area above the sink. Accessories are crocks, old kitchen tools, simple fabrics like cotton, linen, unbleached muslin all work. But on the modern end, I have black and stainless appliances. I keep rugs simple but within the colors in the room, same for the chair upholstery. And I even had a small washstand that is painted barn red in there. Take your time, buy what you love and work within the colors you like and it will look awesome!
