Can someone give me a "virtual" guesstimate?

I am getting 3 very different prices for some work to be done at my house. A garage that is "old school" is being torn down, and I'm pretty much cutting it down to about 2/3 of its original depth. The entire garage currently fits 1 car, not space for too much more, and not sure how much SF that is. I asked for a bid for: demolition of current foundation AND surrounding cement dumping of all demo work and other debris new garage foundation only (dirt areas will be landscaped in future) regular garage structure with standard grade wood frame and wood siding, about 8-9' tall? sheetrocked interior walls 2-3 electrical outlets + overhead light where there is currently NO electrical wiring custom-made wood doors for garage entry (not standard remote door, want this one to "slide" into sides of vertical walls, rustic look "cupola" - custom-designed piece on top for added "country" decor (this looks like a mini roof top like on a church) with some nice details, nothing too elaborate and instead of 4 plain sides or 4 hollow sides, I want them to have shutter type sides so there is ventilation space. I am paying for all the materials so I can choose what I want along the way. I am asking only for the labor on these bids. What would you charge if you have any knowledge of roughly how much this work should cost? I will Edit this question and add the bids I received after I see some prices from knowledgeable, serious responders. Thanks! I live in the Northern California Bay Area. I already have the estimates but one of them is from someone who I believe doesn't have that much experience. I am drifting in the open sea here as far as ME knowing what this should cost more or less. All I want is a ballpark figure from someone with experience in this. I don't need references to more bids! The answer I am looking for is: "This should cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $7,000" (or whatever that key price range is). I've provided all the details for anyone who would know what this would cost to be able to answer my question. That's not very complicated. OK, Yahoo community. Maybe I asked this the wrong way. It's like if you paid 50 cents for an ice cream, and someone else paid $2 and someone else paid $5. You just want to know what the "average" cost of an ice cream is so you know what you're dealing with. Not more recommendations to ask someone else. I'm asking YOU. If you don't know how much this work costs, then please don't bother answering the question. Not interested in more bids. Thank you, anyway, for your suggestions, but they are not addressing my question of a ballpark cost for this work. I need an actual dollar amount.

  1. no
  2. Like other people have said, you have gotten 3 estimates so the choice is entirely yours. If you want you can contact other electricians to see what they say. Another suggestion I have is if you are not comfortable (for example the person you said is not as experienced) I recommend you do not hire him. That is really the best way to answer your question. Another important suggestion I have to give is to visit http://bsafeelectrix.com/. This company patented a new electrical outlet that helps prevent electric fires. If you will be putting new outlets in the garage then I recommend you do it safely. I hope this was helpful.
