Is it possible to use an LCD aperature design in lenses instead of the manual bladed system?

Was just wondering if a variable Liquid Crystal diaphragm could replace the current aperature blades in camera lenses to control the F Stop? Could the LCD be made dark enough to stop enough light? This would mean fewer moving parts in lenses .
