I need to know what color area rug to buy to go with my white walls and slate blue couch and chair... help!?

The area rug needs to keep the room light and not suck the space out of the room by making it feel closed in or smaller than it is. The walls of the living room are white (I'm renting so they have to stay white), my couch and chair are slate blue, what area rug would look good (the carpet is brown and gross so the area rug is going to cover it up) also, what color should the tv/ entertainment center be? I was thinking of doing a washed out white or blue--would this look good? Are there any free online tools that let you design your virtual room?

1. This may sound totally off... but if your couch and chair are more modern... go for a shag carpet- a red tone. I like the TV stands a natural dark wood tone. The virtual room: www.bhg.com (better homes and garden). It shows a floor plan, you have to register-but its great. Good luck!
