Design ideas for modern "minimalist" design style?

I like modern style furniture. I dont like alot of color, just a clean empty look. I've read somewhere it was called "minimalist modern" or something like that. If you've ever seen MTV cribs, the one with Moby is a good idea for what Im going for. Where are some good websites or books with these type of designs? Im having a hard time finding ways to hide things, etc... to get such a clean look.

  1. I don't really know a book or website, but I've designed my house the same way. You should try sticking with one color or similar shades of color. Your furniture should be mostly straight lines and "sleek" looking, such as, you wouldnt' want an antique looking coffee table but rather one that looks simplistic. Also, try not to add any knick knacks around the house, or keep them to a bare minimum.
  2. Here's a link to some idea's that might help you and also look into organizing help or ideas's. I have taken the up storage idea and its given me alot of neatness on the bottom. http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_styles_modern/article/0,,HGTV_3524_2703510,00.html
  3. This website has a lot of examples, just click on the links to the right and make sure to scroll down to see the examples. The thing about the minimalism look is its very clean and streamlined. You can have storage, but it needs to be closed storage generally. If its possible to have built-ins or take advantage of unused vertical space you can create storage. If you need to store things on open pieces, make sure whatever you are using is a similar color to the piece its sitting on sit it doesn't stand out, but visually makes it all look cohesive. Maybe you can use a shoji screen or something similar to cover up your storage pieces. You might be able to partition off some space by installing the ceiling tracks from Ikea that allow you to hand curtains from the ceiling and easily open or close them. If you use solid curtains in one of the few colors in your room to cover up some storage that could work too. If you have pieces already and they are not all the same style, paint them all the same color to make them look like they belong together. You can do a search on amazon for minimalist design - they have good user reviews if you're really going to invest the money in books But you can also look at the "room views" for the products on dwr.com and cassinausa.com Good luck with your designing, go for it!
