What have been plumbing innovations over the years?

I have to do a science project on getting water from a tap. The history of it, like the different systems people used to get water, how they transported it, etc. And then today, how water gets to our houses. For history I currently have Wells and Aquaducts. And today the diagram of how water gets from the plant to our homes. What are some other innovations that have happened over the years?

1. Metal pipes were replaced by PVC pipes which can be joined by Synthetic glue easily.
