Which light rifle and handgun would you recommend for home security?

Compact, easy to maintain and nicely-designed weapons with little recoil, accurate for just 10 - 20metres distance? Can one disable a burglar with two or three pellets from an air-rifle(.22?) ? Thanks for your kind and helpful inputs! :-))

  1. Look into the Taurus Judge, best close range home defense.
  2. I would get the Taurus Judge...the best of both shotgun and revolver. You can use 2.5 inch #6 rounds for great coverage without worry about aiming. Also, if needed, you can always loaded with 45 long colt round too for bigger problems or even 00 buckshot...
  3. Any gun can hurt somebody, like getting a pellet in the eye, but it sounds like you're wanting to know what will bring someone down if you went into your yard and someone was there and trying to hurt you? You could probably get away with a 12 gauge shotgun with low recoil buckshot rounds or maybe birdshot if you're concerned about neighbors getting hit. Take any low recoil handgun like a 9mm to the range and you'll be able to put fifty rounds in your target, and your target's intact. Empty six or eight rounds of buckshot/birdshot, and it tears it to pieces. Shotguns are probably the most affordable alternative, giving you the most bang for your buck. If you're really set on a handgun, the beretta, glock, browning and sig 9mm's are for the most part excellent AS HANDGUNS GO, ruger's good if you're on a budget, though you still need to take any gun to the range to make sure there weren't any kinks at the factory or in the kind of ammo you plan to use. If you put corbon into your 9mm, it's just as easy to fire a shotgun. As far as rifles, the saiga ones are very reasonable and accurate, in 223 and even 7.62x39 doesn't kick too bad. If you want hi cap, go with an ar.
  4. The best gun for home security is the .38 special, that is what i own it is a Taurus ultra-lite, and it has hardly any recoil and plenty of knock down power, and your question about the air rifle,Yes you can disable anyone with two or three shots from a .22 cal pellet rifle, heck i have dropped coyotes at 50 yards with my,177 cal Remington Vantage 1200,i also have a marlin .17HMR bolt action for home security,it is for my wife,it has no recoil whatsoever so she is not scared to shoot it.we are country people so it pays to have a good rifle with all the coyotes we have.
  5. I suppose if oyu shot him right in the face with your 22 cal air rifle it might disable him, but I would only give it about a 5% chance of doing so. compact, and easy to maintain, and nicely designed? shotgun. Little recoil? hum, 410 shotgun? Othewise a nice 357 magnum lever action like is made by marlin would be good, or any pistol caliber carbine really. Kel-Tek SU2000 would be a good choice for budget minded.
  6. You are only allowed to use lethal force against another person if a reasonable person in your situation would be in fear for their life. In that case, you don't want to "disable" anyone. You want to stop them from killing you! A short barrel (must be more than 18 inches) shotgun in 20 or 12 guage in OO Buck would have the best "stopping power" but would have some recoil. You can't get away with "no" recoil. Another option would be a Ruger GP100 revolver in .357Magnum with a 4 inch barrel. It is a heavy revolver (this reduces recoil) and if you shot 38 Special cartridges in it you would have minimal recoil. I would use Corbon 110 grain semi hollow points in 38 special +P+ in it and you should have minimal recoil with adequate stopping power. I would stay away from any type of pellet gun. If your life is in danger you want to stop the person from killing you right away. I have read about people being shot multiple times with .45 cal bullets in the chest and still being capable of harming or killing the person in danger. I hope this helps.
  7. i have a 22 rifle that shoots some tiny bird shot. it just so happened to be a yote on our lawn and i shoot it it fell over like a sack of potatoes this ammo is rare but works effectively as proved its magnum 22 case long but with our guns that are designed for them its perfect they are bolt action 22s with a tubular mag
  8. im just a touch old fashioned, but for a light rifle i prefer a winchester 92 in 45 colt. if youre on a budget, you can pick them up for $400, or up. it hits hard, drops all its weight on what you hit, really reliable, and holds at least 8 rounds and is good to 100 yards. it wont go through walls and hit someone else on the other side too. it has almost no recoil. if a handgun is more to your liking, team up and get a taurus judge, so you can shoot 45 colt or 410 shotgun shells. i wouldnt ever try to shoot a burglar with an air rifle. most likely youll make them madder, and youd stand a better chance of beating them with the air rifle, as a club to disable them, rather than shooting them with it.
  9. I think anything would be good, air rifles I don't think would help look into anything cheap a rim fire 22 would do good or even a .410 shot gun would lay a mother fucker down. You can also buy special ammo that doesn't go through dry wall.
  10. Marlin 1894C lever gun in .357 mag/.38 Special Ruger GP100 double action revolver .357 mag/.38 Special One caliber for two guns. Rifle barrel will give a 30% power increase over the short handgun barrel. Military style ammo is in short supply these days, making .223, 7.62x39mm, 9mm and 45ACP difficult to find. .357 mag is more available and offers good power. .38 Special is cheaper and can be used for practice.
  11. I advise getting a 20-12 gauge shotgun, more deadly then a small rifle or handgun, but have a higher hit potential and won't pass through walls with birdshot, nothing can beat a shotgun for home defense, nothing. a pellet gun might hurt the guy, but will not disable someone easily, as i said, get a shotgun!!
  12. You dont want to skimp on a handgun.Get a Glock;they fill all the purposes a handgun is meant to fill.Oh,and a pellet will piss off a burglar and make him kill you slower for shooting him with such a weak projectile.Use a real firearm to defend your home.If the robber doesnt die, then you'll have to pay his medical bill:"thousands".
  13. "Air rifle"???? You are joking right? You might as well over cook some toast and beat the guy to death with it. Yes it's true, you COULD kill someone with just about anything. But would you really want to trust your life to something designed to dent soda cans? The best all around home defense weapon is a 12 gauge shotgun with regular low base bird shot. It will blow a good sized hole in anyone within 15 feet and could possibly kill up to 100 feet. The plus of using a 12g with low base bird shot is you wont kill your neighbor next door like you would shooting a heavy grain full metal jacket round from a rifle or pistol. Im a Sheriff Deputy and im going to tell you right now that you NEVER want to "disable" anyone by shooting them. If you make the choice to fire any weapon at a person who has illegally entered your home or is putting your life or the lives of others in serious jeopardy then make damn sure you kill that person. Do yourself a favor, google lawsuits related to in home shootings. If you dont kill that person, then you would be better off just letting them rape, rob, torture or kill you.
  14. Double dead-bolt locks and an alarm.
  15. get an AR15 or a good shotgun and really whatever type of handgun that you want. I wouldn't trust the pellet gun especially because many criminals will be high on meth and wont even feel the pellets. However a 5.56 round to the chest would certainly get the idea across.
  16. For home defense you want a full size handgun in at least 9mm. I suggest the Ruger SR9 or the Taurus 24/7 Pro. 9mm is a good defensive round for newer shooters. Make sure you take time to go to a firearm safety course and a defensive handgun class. Just as important as the gun itself. I also suggest a shotgun not a rifle. A Mossberg 500 in 20ga will do you good. The shotgun will be about 300 and the handguns are between 400 and 500 bucks. A .22lr bullet can kill someone or injure them but not to stop a full on attack or charge without a GREAT shot placement. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAFamily?type=Pistol&subtype=Centerfire%20Autoloading&famlst=62 http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=157&category=Pistol
