Why do british people have washing machines in their kitchens?

I don't know if it's just British people, but i've noticed a few times i've been watching a reality tv show (i don't watch very many lol) and they will be british and they have their washing machine in their kitchens! I found this kind of odd... so ya i thought i'd ask! :)

  1. I think because in Europe as a whole space is very limited.
  2. Not just in Britain. It works very well if your apartment is small and it reduces costs by having shorter runs of plumbing pipe (which also means less energy is used for heating water ).
  3. It was not oh so long ago that homes built in the US had the washer in the kitchen. The laundry room as we know it today is a rather new concept. Washers were in the kitchen because of the plumbing. The dryer, if you had one, was in the garage. Later washers and dryers were moved to the garage. Some time in the 60's someone came up with the laundry closet. Which got bigger and actually became the size of a small room. I'm not sure about Britain, but perhaps the shows you saw were in older homes or apartments.
  4. I have noticed this as well. I can't imagine not having a laundry. Aussie.
  5. Limited space and their major appliances are smaller than the US.
  6. most apartments and homes in Europe are small and the kitchen is usually the place where they have room to put the washer.
  7. I have my washing machine in the kitchen, because there's no where else for it to go. It's only really newer builds that have utility rooms. So most houses, or flats, aren't built with them.
