Have any of you built an outdoor cattery?
I was thinking I could buy a dog run and attach it to the wall outside my kitchen window. Then I would get a cat door for the window. I would get a tarp or something to cover the top of it. Then fill the inside with edible plants and climbing furniture. Any other ideas?

- awh, that sounds like a precious idea. :) i'm sure your kitties will love it. lots of toys, lots of catnip and a self filling waterer!
- Yes, I did use my previous dog kennel for my rescued cats. I attached shelves to the chain link with metal shelving from Home Depot and clipped to the chain link with two sided clips. I also put chains on the outside and clipped them to the top on the kennel and to the shelf's. I clamped folded towels on the shelves and they loved their shelves. They also like hammocks so I put a couple of dog cages inside and hung hammocks in the cages. You must have a top of course on the cage and you may have to reinforce the fencing with wire fence if you have young kittens because they will find a spot big enough to get through until they get used to the cattery. I have had cats in my cattery for years and they love it. I throw birdseed out for the birds and the squirrels so the cats get entertained.
- Not yet, but would love to have one.....it's just not possible at this time. Here's two links with lots of photos, lists of materials, etc. that should be helpful: http://www.catsofaustralia.com/cat-enclosures.htm http://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/library/pdf/5194/33.pdf You are a good cat person and I'm sure your cats will be so happy! good luck!
- Even better. I bought a piece of property in a small village with plenty of abandoned sheds and houses full of mice. My cats have never been happier or more content. And when they get tired of each others company they go hunting with the colony of feral cats across the road. Even the neighbours cats get in on the action. We just finished trapping all the feral cats and got them their yearly shots so there's no danger to our cats. There's no sight quite like 15-20 cats parading off into the fields for a day of doing cat stuff.
