Should you tip bathroom attendants even if they don't really do anything for you?

I've been in some fancy restaurants before where in the bathrooms there is a bathroom attendant, this huge array of expensive colognes, nice soaps-- basically a lot of weird, extravegant bathroom toiletries. I don't ever use any of them, besides the normal soap-- which the bathroom attendant usually gives to you. After that, they give you a towel to dry your hands after you are done washing them. I never use the cologne or anything, but I was wondering if it is the proper ettiquette to tip them anyways. I see all this rich, pushover guys hand the bathroom attendant a $20 bill in the most noticable and obnxious way possible, but I think that's a little much. Besides, they usually find a way to douse themselves in some designer cologne. So, what's the proper thing to do? I'm 17, so I'm not one of those rich, pushover guys, but should I even tip the bathroom attendant a little? Before this, I just say "Thanks a lot," or "Have a nice day, thanks,". What's the correct thing to do? Whoa, sorry for all of my grammatical and spelling errors.

  1. ignore him and dont give him even a single penny k
  2. I find em annoying at times and I am quite interested in hearing others opinions on your question. As I am very alergic to colognes and perfumes/going into a mens washroom where there is an attendant stinking up the place is enough to make me literaly vomit and my breathing almost stops. It is a pain. I don't think then that they are doing ME any favors so I do my business as quick as I can and head out RUNNING. No Tip for me - thats for sure
  3. If the attendant gave you friendly service, applied the soap for you and handed you a towel, then it would be nice to give him a tip. Generally 1$ is fine. If you want to take a cigarette or a piece of candy or a spritz of cologne, then you are basically obligated to tip the 1$. If you are at a club and are using the bathroom several times in a night, its ok to tip the attendant every other time. 20$ is way too much, and just an attempt to show off.
  4. I'm just going to say no tip, because you're 17. They aren't expecting anything. I would feel bad to take $ from a minor for handing them a towel.
  5. Tip them. Not a lot, but tip them nevertheless. You really don't know what they have been doing behind the scenes! They have to replenish all that stuff you see and have made your trip to the bathroom as pleasant as possible. They also have mouths to feed, just like you. they have to pay the rent, car insurance, gas & electric, etc. They may even have another job to supplement the this job because they just don't make enough. Have I made my point? It's the same as tipping a waitress or hotel attendant.
  6. If it's just your basic, standard restroom outfitted with the usual porcelain gadgets, toilet paper, soap dispenser, and paper towels, tip 25 ot 50¢ if there's an attendant on duty; he may be employed to keep the place up. Otherwise, in the asker's example, tip 50¢ to $1 if you utilize his services. (Never been in that kind of a restroom tho. I would think that situation an invasion of privacy.)
  7. I tip them because their job is thankless, demeaning and depressing.
  8. $20.00 is a lot to tip any attendant. Think about the fact that these poor souls have to spend hours in a BATHROOM listening and smelling. If for no other reason than that, I would give them a coupleof bucks.
  9. No don't tip if you don't want to. In a way it is extorsion.
  10. He handed you a towel. Tip him, you cheap b@stard!
