Anyone know anything about thinner granite countertops?

I saw on a show on HGTV where they were re-doing a kitchen and they used granite for the countertops, but the countertops were only a fraction of normal granite tops. It seems like its almost a veneer covering and its way less expensive. I dont know where to go for a quote or any additional information. Is there a good website?

  1. You never actually wear throught granite so it makes sense. Just don't start hammering your steaks out on it. How the front edge is finished is quite important - if it isn't going to look cheap - as is plenty of support below to avoid flexing and cracking. It is a similar principle for wall cladding - and has been around for a while. You should get a guarantee from whoever installs it though. For more details try contacting the programme's website.
  2. The thinner granites are reinforced 1 of 2 ways. Some times w/ a heavy nylon netting glued on. The other way is it being reinforced with an embedded steel rod system.. GL

  4. There is is new way to make granite and marble tiles and countertops. It is called laminated marble and granite. Here is a website that has some descriptions of this type of material: http://www.amlinkmarble.com/Tile_marble.htm . A thin layer (1/4") marble or granite is laminated onto a type of backing, such aluminum or ceramic. By doing so, the tile or countertop still show marble or granite appearance but has much lighter weight,
