Can I have a kitchen with a black floor AND units?

We're going to rip out our kitchen and put in a new one. We like the sound of black floor tiles (large slate, riven not smooth), and black gloss units with a dark wood worktop (say, a Walnut colour). We were originally thinking of a black granite worktop, but once we started thinking of black units we thought: enough black! To counter the darkness we thought light walls and a light blue glass splash back, with lights under the plinth at floor level for a little accent and to light the dark corners. I haven't seen many/any pictures of kitchens with a black floor AND black units. Often people use white units to contrast, but I'm not feeling the monochrome that much. Would the black/black/wood work? Is it a design dead-end?

  1. Sorry, I personally like a light bright kitchen.
  2. While it is a perfectly fine design idea, it is particular to you and no one else. The downside there is your re-sale value is zilch. Since kitchens and baths are so important for re-sale top dollars this particular highly contemporary style would put off most of the average populace. If you are willing to completely re-design the kitchen when you need to re-sell, go for it. Otherwise re-design your contemporary style for something that could easily please a more general buyer. You can have some contemporary touches. I would not go black. I am a very contemporary person but a black kitchen makes me crazy to even think about no matter how elegant it is done. You need some warmth in there. Get some cherry involved.
  3. You will get tired of the black very quickly. I had black sink and appliances for about a year and couldn't stand how dark and depressing it made my kitchen and I had a large roof window. I can't even begin to imagine how dark a black floor would increase the dreariness of your kitchen. Additionally, the black shows dust like you wouldn't believe. I had light oak cabinets and floor and light colored walls and ceilings and it still didn't help. Don't do it unless you can find a sample kitchen already done that you can spend some time in. Another thing you could do is paint everything in the current kitchen black before you rip it out (paint is cheap) just to give you the feel of what it would be like.
  4. Before doing this you might want to think about how hard it will be to keep the floor clean...it will show everything..then, you will want to think about how this will fit into your home's style..if you love it and want to keep your house then do it, but if you plan on selling it, you will lose money on your kitchen design. I think stainless countertops and appliances would be better. http://web.hgtv.com/webhgtv/verticals/Slideshows/Black_Cabinets/photo3_milesreddKitchen.jpg http://www.thekitchendesigner.org/storage/black%203.jpg http://www.thekitchendesigner.org/journal/2007/10/22/black-kitchens-trending-now.html Here are a couple of pics I found.
