home automation query?

Hi I want to design a simple home automation project whereby I can place hardware & use programming languages to design a friendly GUI to operate electrical appliances like light, etc. Can any one suggest me any reference site to get that first step into this. I am also looking to know more on hardware required. In case you'd know who has done something similar earlier, please let me know if I'd be able to reach you on email etc. Thanks,
