1. My mom's an interior designer. She designs people's houses from the inside and then she sets up the "curb appeal" so their houses aren't ugly.
2. From a social level not much, it's not the noblest of profession like a nurse/doctor, firefighter, environmental lawyer or anyone in the environmental sector, teacher, children's rights lawyer/advocate or anyone who works with abused, neglected or displaced children, anyone in the peace corps or the red cross, people who work for non-profits, people who work with or for the disabled or war vets. So when I think of interior design I think of throw pillows and window treatments, and rich bored women who like to burn through there husbands money so no I cant see that there are many values and or contributions to interior design, unless you are doing it for free for someone who has been through some kind of crisis associated with there home like a fire or act of god like on the show deserving design something like that.
3. Interior designers contribute to society by making the world a more beautiful place. Some people are gifted with being artistic and use their talents to make the world more pleasant that way. Some designers focus on hospitals and dr. offices, using colors that are soothing and that lift people's spirits. I've always had a fantasy of being a designer- one who decorates for poor people. Like fixing up houses for new immigrants or poor people using stuff from second hand stores. That way you have to get really creative, not just go buy new stuff from a furniture store. Or, it would be neat to create interiors for orphanages and children's homes. You could create a kid's fantasy room using bright colors and different themes based on their interests, or do a really homey interior using country furniture. Same with nursing homes. I wonder what colors, designs, furniture could you use to make people feel happier in a situation like that.? Some people are very sensitive visually and their moods are affected by their surroundings. I would say that if someone is a creative and artistic person they are making a contribution to society using the talents they have. ,
