What is the best software to get for getting started in creative Advertising prints and Graphic Design?

I'm in Advertising and Public Relations and haven't taken any of those kinds of classes. I want a heads up - I want to teach myself. How about Adobe Creative Suite 3? Any suggestions?

1. the de facto graphics software is from Adobe... so when CS3 comes out, it'll be the standard.
