LED lights for the home - help?

I want to design cost effective lights for use on 50Hz 230V supply. Anyone give me an idea of how i should connect the LEDs arrays? Do I have to use some resistors, will they not consume power and dissipate heat? Please explain with respect to one lamp (made of a number of LEDs).

  1. You will need many LEDs in series. Each one will have a voltage drop of just 1-3 volts so you will need on the order of 100 of them in series and a current limiting resistor. You will also need a diode bridge to rectify the ac to pulsating dc. The resistor will dissipate a small amount of power as will the bridge diodes but it will not be very much compared to the LEDs.
  2. These designs are in development in industry. I believe that the PWM type of control is presently considered the most likely successful design type. Use your ingenuity the most likely winning design will be the one that is the most efficient.
