How did television and other innovations of the “consumer age” affect American politics,?

- They made the ability to 'act' on television a critical skill in getting to office. They dramatically increased the importance of fundraising (since TV is expensive) and therefore increased the influence of lobbyists. They increased the value of 'looking good' relative to cultural norms - you can no longer be elected to office if you are ugly or fat.
