Why are there never lights in the living room of a home?
My wife and I recently began looking for a new house to purchase because our current home is too small. One of the things we noticed was there are never any light fixtures in the living rooms. Is there a reason for this design? I think one house we saw had a light in the living room, every other room has a light, bathroom, bedroom, dining room, kitchen. Whats the deal??

- Because people tend to use reading lamps in the living room. Glaring bright overhead lights are not usually desirable in a living room. Often you'll find a light switch that leads to an outlet so you can plug a lamp in yet turn it on/off as you enter/exit the front door.
- Depends how old is the house so as an interior designer and decorator my father's house is about 35 years old and he don't have a light fixture in the living room! Reason why that because there is a plug in outlet connect to the light switch as you add lamp and have it plug in and then you use the switch on the wall turn on! Some house are made that way for no reason. If you don't have a wiring in the ceiling so the only way I suggest is to get an electrician to put one for you!
- How old are most of the homes you're looking at? I've noticed this with older homes (over 10 years) but the newer built ones usually have some light fixture in the living room.
- see the light level is low because of the old style of lighting thats still thought of as warm standing lamps for readin and tablelamps for general lighting but a competant electrician can run anything you need like pot light or track or minispots or sconces then add the mood lights to the areas
