Interior design question - painting my attic bedroom?
my bedroom is in the attic, is measures 20' x 12'. Its rather spacious, but what makes it difficult is the fact that is has a sloped ceiling on one side, and the a single window at each end. The sloped ceiling can make it feel smaller, and the lack of windows doesn't allow much light. I very much need to paint (its white right now) and want to do a contrasting wall in a deep red color. The contrasting wall would be the wall opposite the slanted ceiling (the one where my head board would be). The rest of the walls, to keep things bright, I was thinking of doing in a bright orange-gold color. Now here is where things get complicated. To visually lift the sloped ceiling, I am thinking of painting the two foot high straight wall below it with verticle stripes alternating the same orangy-gold with a one that is one shade lighter. My question is, should I continue the lighter or the darker of the golds throughout the rest of the room, should the ceiling be the darker or the lighter?

- I would go lighter all the way...the lighter gold and then make the ceiling lighter...dark colors will usually only make a space look smaller, and obviously, darker.
- Those colors don't complement each other to begin with...red with gold...maybe if you're a florida state fan.
- If you don't have much light in the attic , it all depends on the mood that you are trying to create , personally I really think that you should go one colour all the way this will wrap the room , you could paint the whole room in the light orange / gold and add red pillows or bedding , get some black and white pictures and frame them in red , if privacy is not an issue because of the height you could either have a white sheer panel or make a valance of the contrasting colours, red and yellow , and a black lamp to give it punch!
- Vertical stripes below that slope aren't really going to do what you are wanting them to do, simply because the slope will cut it off. If you want to do the wall your headboard is on a different color than the rest, that's fine, but then make sure the rest are just one color (the lighter the color the better). Having stripes on one wall that are alternating shades and then having another wall a completely different color is going to make the place seem very busy and small. If you want to add in more color, do it in the fabrics and accessories i.e. bedding, window treatments, artwork, lamps, rugs. Little bits of color here and there make it more interesting and chic rather than a bright colors on all the walls. If you want to keep your color scheme, I'd do the red wall and have the other walls be a very very light gold/yellow. Always do your ceiling light, even a lighter color than your lightest wall color.
- A friend of mine just did his daughters room like that and he used either 8 or 11 different colors.....purple and gold were among some of the colors you have mentioned.........I thought he had finally flipped out............but ya know what........it was the best looking bedroom I've ever seen. And yes the vertical strips your talking about will help that area look like it is growing taller.............so have fun.........and don't worry....they always make another quart of paint and a roller, if not invest in a fifth......like any other good painter:) all the best. enjoy.
