5. Mainly it was down to numbers. The South was hopelessly outnumbered.
6. Plain and simple: rifling. It allowed troops to fire much more accurately over greater distances. Unfortunately the tactics didn't change. Both sides used Napoleonic tactics when it came to troop formations. Long ranks, many ranks deep and the troops marching shoulder to shoulder. This coupled with the rifled barrels made for slaughters on the battle field. Google the Battle of Antietam. Combined casualties on both sides were almost 23,000. Keep in mind this is for a SINGLE DAY. Or Cold Harbor where 7000 Americans fell in 20 minutes.
