What medical innovations were controversial when they first came out?

I need to know for a school research project; e.g. Stem cells. but please no Stem cells, i'm so sick of Stem cells. Past and Present Innovations, preferably Present. actually, just present well, in texas there was a big controversy over that cervical cancer vaccine ("i'm gonna be one less" slogan), but i dont wanna touch that w/ a ten foot pole

  1. All of them
  2. coca cola was! (it was a medication first)
  3. In-vitro fertilization also called IVF (Test tube babies) Vaccinations ex. Rabies vaccine - Louis Pasteur http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Pasteur How present is present though? IVF and Vaccines are still used today If you still want to stick to present-day controversial topics though, the only things left besides stem cells are cloning and genetic engineering... both of which I'm also tired of debating. Edited: Actually, I think Gardasil is a great controversial topic. The vaccine hasn't been out on the market that long, and people already want to make it mandatory to inject girls with this vaccine? If you listen carefully to the commercial, it says that it MAY protect against 4 of the viruses that cause cervical cancer. You still have to go in for pap smears too. Some people don't have insurance, and the vaccine costs about $300 I believe. So, the real question is, is it worth it?
  4. Washing hands before surgery.

  7. Here's a suggestion. In 1982, two Australian doctors, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren claimed that stomach and duodenal ulcers were caused by bacterial infection from a hitherto unknown species, Helicobacter pylori. They proposed that treatment should be with antibiotics, not antacids. Many of us in the medical community laughed at this. We all knew that ulcers were caused by excess acid in the stomach, a result of bad diet and type A personalities. But within a few years standard therapy for ulcers was a course of erythromycin and proton pump inhibitors. In 2005 Drs. Marshall and Warren were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
