How do I remove silicone sealant over-applied to bathroom ceramic tiles?

A poor finish with the wrong type of sealant; I want to use bathroom/kitchen sealant and not the outdoor uPVC silicone sealant. Problem is, its been put onto the ceiling (my a bodger) and emulsion / water-based paints won't help.

  1. screw driver or putty knife :)
  2. can you use a stanley blade to make a neat line across the edge the use the blade to scrape the rest off?
  3. A very sharp blade and literally slice it off and start again. Shouldn't be on a ceiling anyhow! Use filler for up there!
  4. Pure acetone may help. But beware, it can also eat away other surfaces.
  5. I don't know, but DON'T try scraping! I took a paint scraper and tried to get mine off and ended up chipping the ceramic. :( Good luck! :)
  6. Try and get some of it off with a stanley knife, then use white spirits to wipe over and get the rest off.....
  7. A very sharp scraper will do the trick
  8. Try heating it with your wife's hairdryer, then peel off, maybe. HEY, how come all the ladies are answering this question.
  9. If it's dried your screwed- you'll probably end up taking the lot off and having to reapply it - its like getting the label off a video in one piece, possible in theory, but it never happens.
  10. would you use a propane blow torch or would your rather use elbow grease? i say you can do it with a chisel.
  11. There is a product called silicon seal remover, made by Hagesan(HG), which works well, if you can find it. Try a tile shop or big DIY store.
  12. It should peel off or rub off with friction.
  13. you can buy silicon remover. It melts the sealer its not great but its the only thing I have found that gets it off.Its better to use masking tape when appling the sealent then strip the tape off straight away and you have a nice neat edge.
